This is definitely in the blathering on category. Having just viewed Mr. Palin's "Around the World in 80 Days" program it seemed necessary to send a response of some sort to The Reform Club. Copy (with address deleted) follows:

The Reform Club
104 Pall Mall
City of Westminster
London SW1Y 5EW

I have just completed viewing Michael Palin’s series of programs, “Around the World in 80 Days” as broadcast on BBC television.
I think that nothing sums up the degradation of English character and its decline of culture within upper class society as well as the moment when Mr. Palin, having successfully circumnavigated the globe, is denied a celebratory entry to your club of so-called “gentlemen”.
I would expect most of your own countrymen experienced a similar reaction. What a bunch of horses-ass buffoons you all must be. It just further demonstrates that money cannot purchase character.

Good one, Elliott!

Given the tremendous popularity of Palin's travels shows (and the fact that he has since been made a CBE), I wonder what the Reform Club's reaction would be today.

That's priceless, Ellicott! lol. it really gave me a good laugh. I would love to be a fly on the wall watching whoever opens your letter and reads this. Just imagine it! Hahahahahahaha.

Elliott I just had to write to tell you how offended I am at your slur on both my country and my class....ONLY KIDDING!! ;)

Well done mate.

Hear hear to that! I thought it was shameful! I also thought it was shameful that when he reached the South Pole in (not surprisingly) Pole to Pole, he had to sleep in a tent outside instead of in the research station. All right, so he's not American - and? All right, so he's not a scientist - and? He's from the BBC for Heaven's sake! I know he's used to sleeping in tents, especially after Himalaya, but this was ridiculous!

Teee heee. Actually, on my last visit to London, I walked down Pall Mall and I walked up the steps of the Reform Club and was met by two securities. When I asked, may I take a picture inside, they politely said that "it's private club, no photos allowed". I really really laughed at that, remembering the end of ATWI80D :-)

Maybe the Reform Club should be...reformed? Hahahaha. ;)

Lovely letter,Elliott. Very depressing to realise these 'institutions' hardly change at all: a change in the law hardly affected them as far as admitting women goes (they still don't) - stick-in-the-mud, elitist, snobbish - the Worst of British

Yes,geordiegirl,that sums it up well.
Elliott:Let us all know if you get a formal reply, please.Snobbery IS still rife in certain clubs in Britain. peter.
