The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Colin Cooper by Spursfan on 17 July 2008 6:59pm
For people 'of a certain age' who remember Climax Blues Band, the founder Colin Cooper was buried in Stafford this week, Monday to be precise.

Climax had a top ten hit in the 70s with 'Couldn't Get it Right'.

However I remember them playing at my youth club when I was 13 or 14 in the year they were founded, 1967 or 68. They were brill even then (or so it seemed to me). They were called Climax Chicago Blues band then.

I wasn't what you would call a fan, although of course I was proud of them coming from Stafford (as incidentally did Medicine Head, Neil Morrisey and Ozzy Osbourne - well ok, he originated from Brum but he DID used to live in a village just outside Stafford (Ranton).

Actually talking of Neil Morrisey, my daughter's ex-husband's sister-in-law (i.e. brother's wife)'s brother (with me so far?) was NM's best friend.

Anyway, back to Colin Cooper - he was buried at St Mary's in Stafford.

[In the following from the Independent, they refer to the 'Chicago Climax Blues Band' - wrong. It was 'Climax Chicago Blues Band']

The original line-up were:----PETE HAYCOCK (guitar),RICHARD JONES (bass),DEREK HOLT (second guitar); ARTHUR WOOD (keyboards),GEORGE NEWSOME(drums),COLIN COOPER (saxophone). In the 1970's, Climax Blues Band made several successful tours of America, supporting top class US rock bands.
Footnote: NEIL MORRISSEY (of 'Men Behaving Badly' BBCTV fame) now owns 2 Hotels in West Wales, including the famous BROWN'S HOTEL, in Laugharne, much loved by the late Welsh poet DYLAN THOMAS, who was a regular boozer in that hotel.

Ah yes - The Grapes. Derek Holt was the landlord at one time. I see they have moved those figures from the roof - shame. They looked real as you drove past!!

Paul O'Grady ('Lily Savage') was recently quoted (THE TIMES,Wed 23 JULY,2008) as saying:
.."The only difference between a funeral and a wedding in Liverpool is ONE LESS DRUNK...".....
(Paul O'Grady actually comes from Birkenhead, across the River Mersey).
