The ORIGINAL reality TV by himechan on 26 April 2003 11:31am

With the recent glut of "reality shows", it occurred to me that Palin's travel series were "reality TV" before it became a trend.

(I suppose one could also include MTV's "The Real World", but that title was a bit misleading--how many people in real life get set up in a big apartment by a cable network?)

Travel, on the other hand, is a universal theme everybody can relate to. True, few people have traveled as extensively as Michael Palin, but we can all relate to meeting strange new people, encountering pleasant and unpleasant situations on the road, etc. As for these contestants on "reality shows" eating any number of gross and disgusting things...well, let's just say that I don't like to think about half the things Michael has eaten!

So, IMHO, his series were several years ahead of their time--and done with a lot more insight and genuine wit.

Ack! Why did my post go up twice, when I only hit the submit button once?

That's cyberspace for ya...sorry 'bout the repetition!
