This'll shock ya by kazzzz on 19 September 2008 3:32pm
Today I was at the shops and some man was standing behind me on the escalator, I had Ava in a trolley and he stood about 6 inches behind me looking down my top! I asked him if he coud move back and he asked me what my problem was and asked if I'd seen my psychiatrist today!!

Well it just got better and better from there, I told him how rude he was and he followed me to my car going on about how I needed a psychiatrist!
Twas awful!!!

You were teasing the poor man I think.

Typical male response.

How horrible and frightening! He was the one needing to see a psychiatrist! You must have felt very vulnerable, especially having to carry Ava.

If you ask me he's the one needing a shrink (the man on the escalator, not Johnny!)!!!

What an awful experience. Poor you - was there no security around you could have told?

[As an aside - I don't mind going up escalators but I am scared to come down them. How you manage with a trolley I don't know.

At our supermarket in Turkey (which is Tesco but called Kipa) the food part is on the second floor and they have a special sort of moving walkway so you can bring your trolleys down - I always send the husband down that way and come down in the lift!!]

Be strong Karen. The way some men behave makes me embarassed to be a man. We are not all like that.

Kaz, I'd have immediately told someone, ANYONE. And stood by another person as soon as possible and not moved. But telling someone else might have resulted in your getting to your car safely and without harassment. I'd have been scared stiff and afraid to leave the shop..

Karen, I have some questions.
After this guy responded, did you keep speaking with him?
I think you were too polite with him asking him to move back. I think you needed to startle him with something like "Do you mind?"
Do you think you might have been more "on edge" because you had Ava with you?
Was this guy young, old, small, big, aggressive, whiny, etc.?

I might ask in class next week, but of course there will be cultural differences, etc.
