The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Duchess and Daughters - Their Secret Mission by Spursfan on 5 November 2008 2:41pm
There appears to be a row brewing over the above programme to be seen tomorrow night, in which Fergie, Eugenie and Bea visit orphanages in Turley and Bulgaria.

About 17 years ago, we visited a Turkish friend of ours in Kayseri, Central Turkey. He speaks no English (or very little) but his brother explained he was a Headmaster.

During our visit, we visited him at his work and discovered that their English had been off a bit - he was actually head of an orphanage.

The orphanage had two parts, one for children up to 12 (I think) and the other for girls above that age (it has been a while and we purposely did not take any photos or video out of respect for the children). Our friend (who has long since retired) was head of the whole orphanage.

We were taken into a room where cots lined the walls. In these were small babies. It put me in mind of the Romanian orphanages, which were so often in the news at that time.

Then we went to a sort of 'classroom' where there were children up to about 4. They all clamoured round us, putting their hands up so we would pick them up. For a while I had a routine of one child in my arms and two clamouring each side, then swapping until I had picked up each child (I hope!!).

This was repeated in another room with slightly older children. All the children in these rooms had shaved heads which served to remind me even more of Romania.

The decor as sombre and the children didn't have much, but I CAN say that there were looked after. It was quite upsetting though and as I say after 17 years we have not forgotten it.

Later, the older girls and the teachers had a volleyball match and we were invited to take part. As I remember, Simon (who was then about 15) joined in.

My feelings at the time were mixed - glad that we had had the opportunity to visit a Turkish orphanage, but great sadness at seeing the children like that.

These people do these things for publicity, Anne. Something similar may happen with William & Harry sleeping-rough all over Africa, or whatever.

I'm so sad to hear about the Turkish orphanages. As you say, reminds one of Romania & the first pictures from 1989.

Though I am a non-royalist I have a lot of respect for Harry after he went to Afghanistan and also the work he has done in Africa. William too.

Also I have always liked Fergie since she went up the aisle winking and I'm sure her heart was in the right place when doing this film - I just wanted to share the memories it had stirred when I read about it in the paper.
