To be honest, in Australia we actually say 'basically' like it's going out of fashion.. ;)
Feel free to add your most hated or beloved cliches below, without pulling our (collective) leg. |

It really irks me when people preface a remark with, "You know..."
Unless we are blessed with the psychic power to know what the speaker is about to say, we DON'T know!! |

Sometimes the husband will say something like 'can you pass me the thingy, it's on the whatsit'. I get really cross when he does that as I don't know what the 'thingy' is or where the 'whatsit' is!!!
One thing that annoys me is when people do that thing where they go up at the end of a sentence as if it is a question if you see what I mean.
I must admit these so-called cliches don't bother me a jot though. I use a lot of them myself but it doesn't mean I am uneducated. I have a good education (with a degree) and I had elocution lessons (I wanted to be an actress and thought the certs from RADA would be useful!!) at school. At the end of the day they are just part of everyday language. |

Oh! Anne, I had to laugh - "whatsit" and "thingy" were terms Nick used quite often. It was worse when this involved the 'phone. Thanks for the memory.
I often use "on the other hand", which I don't particularly like.

That's VERY common in Australia :) |

Prhaps it's a man thing, Linz!!
Ev - I also notice my sister and nephews (NZ) do it but it sort of sounds normal when they do it. It sounds more contrived and put on when we do it. |
