Today's NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day: A police dashboard video camera in Edmonton, Canada on Nov. 20th captures a meteor as it explodes through the Earth's atmosphere:

I saw that this morning on the news. It is though the meteor was the size of a tractor trailer truck. Officials are searching for the crash site. You could see the lights up to 500 miles. |

It looks like both pieces burnt up before they hit the ground.

The link to the police video has been changed to the photograph of an outer space nebula since the original message was written.

The clip seems to be a repeat of itself as there are similar landmarks on the right side so there was only one fireball. |

Wow! The next thing you expect after a sight like that is President Morgan Freeman telling us everything will be alright. |

That first link didn't work well although it does show something spectacular. Here's a different link to a You Tube clip:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HH7piToho4
The size of a tractor trailer, Mike? I think we would all have felt the vibrations from something that size! Maybe home security will quarantine Canada until they find the crater it caused.

Ok I've corrected the original link. The NASA website always uses the same link for 'today's' photo then the address changes the next day. If that makes sense. |

I see there was another one, Asteroid 2008 TC3, which was spotted 21 hours before striking earth over Sudan about two months ago. This was the first time detection and then strike prediction has been accurately calculated before the strike.

It was the Catalina Sky Survey in Tucson that saw it first. Did you hear about this locally, tucsonmike? |
