Breaking news from IL: Gov. B gets busted by mrsteabag on 9 December 2008 8:12pm

Gov. Blagojavich was arrested this morning. He was trying to sell the Senate seat vacated by Pres-to-be Obama for either campaign funds or a cabinet appointment. He also was withholding funds for the now-bankrupt Tribune Company (parent company for the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Cubs, and several other media outlets) intended to help them sell Wrigley Field unless they fired a couple of editorial writers who had been less than complimentary. On top of that, he withheld $8M in funds for a children's hospital that services underpriviliged kids. because the CEO wouldn't donate $50K to his campaign fund. I vote for him because the other candidate ran on a platform of racism and fear. Could we please have a gov. here in IL that we actually want to vote for instead of making sure the bigger nut case doesn't get into office?

It's weird because I've seen pictures of Blagojevich in the news regarding Obama's Senate seat, etc., and I kept getting this really bad feeling around him - I didn't even like to see Barack standing next to him - but there would be no bad news - it didn't make any sense. I usually don't get bad feelings so strongly unless it makes sense - today it did. I never believe it until it happens. But the more it happens, the more it happens the same way - strong feelings about someone I don't know that seem to make no sense. mrsthing has similar experiences too. I still don't understand it all. It always makes me feel a little funny, like why?

Serves him right for having a name that noone can pronounce.

Quite right, kazzzz! How the hell do you pronounce 'Blagojevich'?
(He is the second Serbian-American to be elected Governor of a US state;George Voinovich is also Serbian-American and was elected Governor of Ohio.)

The man who brought him to book,US Prosecutor and Chicago attorney,Patrick Fitzgerald, has a very impressive and consistent record of getting indictments in high-profile cases of public corruption. Other 'scalps' he has previously claimed include:Lewis 'Scooter' Libby Jr.(in the Valerie Plame/Joseph Wilson case); Conrad Black, who operated a newspaper company in Chicago;John and Joseph Gambino (crime bosses); blind Egyptian sheik Omar Abdel Rahman;and,in 2002,he managed to put former Illinois Governor George Ryan in prison,so Mr. Blagojevich cannot say the warnings weren't there.

It's pronounced bla-GOY-o-vich.
He went to the office just as if it's business as usual this morning.
An interesting twist: he'd approached several people to do a quid-pro-quo for Obama's seat has been identified as Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. That broke this morning.
MMM, I have something sorta-kinda in common with you and Mrs. Thing--I get anxiety attacks for no good reason just before big stories break. I never know what's going to happen. No wonder I was scarfing down chocolate.

mrsteabag: there seems to be a degree of irony here,in that "The Chicago Tribune" can't report the Rod Bla-GOY-o-vich (Thank You!)corruption scandal because "The Chicago Tribune" (and "The L.A.Times") has filed for bankruptcy...

Did you perchance see this coming,or were you unaware of it?

:) Good point, bIG! It is one of the great ironic twists in this whole week. The Tribune Company has been in the weeds for a while now--they filed under what's called Chapter 13--they won't be stripped of everything and will have enough assets to keep on keeping on for a while. The ad revenue has been dwindling for both print and web versions over the past year.
Anyway...the latest polls report that 98% think Gov. B should resign. If he doesn't, options under the state constitution include impeachment and the States Attorney filing charges with the state Supreme Court and getting him removed that way.

I expect corruption. I am floored @ how brazen this schmuck is!

I know the Gov. has been involved with more than just trying to "sell" Obama's Senate seat, but in regard to that issue (and Hillary's seat in NY, too, for that matter) I don't understand why a special election isn't held, for the constituents to elect a replacement. Makes you go HMMMMMM.

I am sorry about this, mrsteabag. I feel your pain, I'm from New Jersey.
:^)

Illinois is known for their political corruption. Chicago in particular.
