The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Cheap cat toys by sighthound on 16 December 2008 5:00am
I'm fostering a litter of orphan kittens who, after recovering from their disastrous start, are now amazing bundles of energy. I've given them all sorts of fuzzy bouncing things to play with which keeps them amused but I came back from the grocery store today with 8 paper bags which, when emptied and scattered about the kitchen, have become an incredible kitty obstacle course. They are the greatest cat toys ever! And they are free. The kittens bounce on them, hide in them and plan ambushes on their litter mates. You just have to fluff them up after the cats have flattened them. It's already provided me and them with two hours of amusement and they show no signs of slowing down.

You are so lucky! I love kittens! I bet they love those bags! One of my cats totally used to play soccer with crumpled paper - he was amazing with his paws. I had some kittens too who used to knock the phone of the hook, and push on the buttons -- sometimes when you were on another phone in the house. They were intrigued by the ring, and the sounds the buttons made when pushed -- it was hysterical. You would be on the phone, and there would just be these random kitten-inspired beeps. :) <:x <:x <:x

(Their beeps sounded kind of the the Close Encounters theme song. :)

LOL! I love watching kittens play, endless amusement. How many kittens are you fostering, Geraldine?

MMMmmm - we had a cat once who played football with me with a small ball.

I took in four and two already have found homes. A woman I met on the internet just took over an animal shelter in a very rural part of the state where there are few potential homes for homeless animals so she, at her own expense, takes them to foster homes in more populous areas. She's doing a great job of getting animals adopted who formerly would have been put down. And I get the fun of playing with kittens before they turn into cats. She's got more waiting for me once these two get adopted.

Tightly wrapped foil balls are great toys, too. They're shiny, and they roll really nicely. My husband had a friend with four active but comically obese cats, all of whom would not only have soccer games with each other (picture four obese cats going at it like pros on the field), but would play fetch with their owner!
