Let's NOT get emotional about it

The big thing on Canadian TV, maybe it's just the sports guys (I don't really notice any of the other pap), but it is often...every game, that someone says something like, "But the emotions, tsk, thethe guyth really care" or some other garbage. I watch sports so I don't have to see old ladies made up like teenagers, weeping profusely trying to, what, grab me by the heart?
Maybe they're trying to enlargen the female sports-viewing audience. Gag me with a TV antenna.

You've reminded me of the 'emotional rollercoaster' that some people manage to get on!? |

Yes well in the words of Robert Smith, (The Cure) Boy's Don't Cry. |

"fag-boy"? Pete??!! Did somebody hijack your user account?
The "emotional" sports stuff doesn't interest me any more than anything else does, so they haven't won me over to watching endless displays of boys beating each other up. |

Pete, I agree 100%. If you watched the Super Bowl pre-game, you got the long, drawn-out story about the Cardinals' star player and how he was estranged from his mother, she died, he never told he loved her. And I thought, "Don't care don't care DON'T CARE." It was a NON-story and had nothing to do with anything. When I want human interest stories I'll watch them. When I want SPORT I want SPORT! |

I have to agree, Cori. All those "Olympic Moments" got so tiresom. Life's tough, you made good, good for you. Now GET ON WITH IT! It's hard to feel sorry for someone who's biggest "tragedy" is that he was hyperactive as a child and some kids didn't like him (Phelps).
I don't watch much in the way of sports--just the Olympics, and an occasional tournament game. |

The only athlete who I felt deserved emotional hype was Oksana Bayiul. If anyone had the right to plead dysfunction (father abandoning her, mother dying of cancer, coach who'd adopted her more or less dying of cancer, and a couple of other tragedies that escape me as well as growing up in the former USSR), it was her. I liked Tonya Harding until she got mixed up with the loser ex-husband. I badly wanted her to win--chopping firewood to earn the money to pay for expenses was such a refreshing change from the princess skaters. |

Yes, but then Oksana went and messed up her life and behaved very badly for awhile. She lived her in CT before she slipped into obscurity. She was in the news a lot, usually for drunk driving. Too bad--she was a gifted skater.
I just don't get this trend in sob stories--they do it on the talent shows, too. What happens if you didn't grow up in the 'hood dodging drug dealers' bullets, or lose your parents at an early age, or against all odds overcome some crippling illness or handicap? What if you're just a talented person with a dream of making it big? That doesn't count?

I sympathise, Pete. Modern Life an'all that, eh? Why should you have tears injected into your sports appreciation?
I can't do public emotionalism myself, and I deplore sportspeople and ESPECIALLY actors at award ceremonies who do(Kate Winslet, looking at you). |
