I'm with you! A Hallmark-invented load of malarkey. If you're a perfectly content single person, all of a sudden because it's a certain date, you're supposed to feel deprived? If you're a perfectly content married person with a spouse who loves you and does things for you all the time, then suddenly you're supposed to be pissed if they don't jump through hoops on this one particular day?
BUT I'm glad you two are okay and concerning yourselves with stuff like this! |

That's it ...you don't need the media to tell you to buy someone a bunch of flowers on a certain day.
I felt so sorry for my Jess though, she made her boyfriend pancakes, coffee, juice, tied a love heart balloon to the tray and bought him a little gift and he didn't give her anything.
And I was spoilt with a pair of earrings.

| Yes, it is. We attended a Slow Food Fair in London on Saturday (artisan cheeses, meat produced to high welfare standards, etc. I cleaned up - ) and there were at least 2 stalls selling Valentine Gift Packages, fizzy wine & heart-shaped cakes wildly overpriced. Opportunism or what? |

| But it's my wedding anniversary. 23 years of mutual growth experiences. I agree that there are a lot of greedy miscreants out there who have perverted the meaning of the holiday. We went for lunch at our favorite Indian buffet and ate a lot of chocolate, then took Orion to Petsmart to get a box of good biskies. |

| Yes, there is pressure to buy big items, but we just get a card and a small tidbit for fun. And they aren't really so-called romantic items, just something heard that we've expressed a desire to have. For instance, I bought a small handbook about constellation gazing for my honey bunch. he got me a few small items for my dollhouse which is close to being full tilt! It's an adult collection in the colonial Williamsburg style. Not as easy as the Victorian or modern types . I have no electric items, nor anything that wouldn't be used during the 1700's. |

Yeah, I feel the same about x-mas (different than Christmas)too. OK, our society is propelled by profit motive and I can simply ignore that aspect of these two simulated 'occasions'. The negative aspect of valentines day, and x-mas is it takes away from the real feelings we have toward others. Instead of a spontaneous, or, 'from the heart' act, we are told what we should do, what colour it is, what day to do it on, how much we should spend...
Now Birthdays...there is a reason to celebrate.
