Stimulus Package. by tucsonmike on 17 February 2009 12:56pm
It has to work. If is doesn't work, we are in, well we can all fill in the blanks.

Don't get me wrong, there was no choice. I don't agree with all of it. The purpose is to sew the seeds for jobs. It had to be pushed through so quickly. The good thing is the automakers are going to be forced to provide viable plans for staying alive.

I keep saying at the rate things are going, I will be in my sixties putting in solar panels. In the '30's there was a song, working for the WPA.

May we live in interesting times?

What is this all about, Mike?

tucsonmike: I don't yet understand how this $787 BILLION stimulus package will be allocated so that all 50 states get a proportionate share of the funds.

For example,California has announced a $40 BILLION dollar "Funding Hole" in their 2009 budget, and unless this hole can somehow be filled they say they will have to defer or cancel 276 ongoing road and other community projects.

Wall St. remains pessimistic, down over 250 points last time I checked.

There goes my daughter's 509 account! :-(

There is a new government website,

which explains how and where the money will be allocated.

Chrysler and GM are being forced to crawl to Congress for any money.

California's annual (bloated) budget is now running at $160 BILLION dollars. President Obama has announced an initial stimulus disbursement of $3.8 BILLION dollars for the state of California. ..One wonders if it will be enough to keep all projects in place?

An interesting comparison,fiscal-wise,is that Hollywood producers spent a whopping total of $160 million dollars on making one movie "SAHARA",starring Matthew McConaughey.

We will be getting IOUs instead of our tax refund in CA this year and, to keep people from changing their withholding status, if not enough is taken out of our checks for next year's taxes (which has always been legal as long as you paid up by April 15th) there will be a severe penalty.

We stll don't have the budget that the legislature was legally obligated to submit by last June. The problem with writing a budget in CA is that it has to be approved by a 2/3 majority so individual legilators hold out for a lot of "pork" for their districts, however, this week one Senator's demand was that they pass a law that no legislator would get paid for the time the budget is overdue. The rest of the legislators were not amused but I'll vote for that guy if I ever get the chance.

We've had a stimulus package passed here too (the second in a few months in fact) which has recieved a lot of criticism. I'm in two minds, really, and I have benefitted from both packages. It will plunge us into more debt, but at the same time who's gonna argue with a nice little cash payout?
Re: Stimulus Package. by mrsthing on 19 February 2009 2:38am
Ava, maybe, when it's her paycheck that's being taxed to pay for mom's cash payout.

But what else can we do? I'm terrified that we'll end up like Russia just before their collapse, or like any other country with a trashed economy. I've been poor; poverty sucks; don't want to be poor again. Especially not at this stage of life. Before the crash, I was actually considering telling my husband I was quitting as his assistant, but we can't afford that now.

Feeling pretty hopeless these days, and the news headlines don't help. Still, we'll be a bit richer--we refinanced our mortgage, and that reduces our monthly payment a bit.

Well yes, but this package doesn't include a payment for Ava, it's only for school aged children.
