Heavy scenes for Cricket. by perfectbitch on 3 March 2009 1:31pm
Just heard about the attack on the players of the Sri Lanken cricket team in Pakistan. Quite shocking.

Indeed,Linz,as we say:"It's not cricket!"
It's not cricket to attack a cricket team's bus when they are on a 'goodwill visit' to another country.

Frank Gardner,BBC's Security correspondent says it bears similar hallmarks to the co-ordinated attacks in Mumbai (Bombay,India) recently, and was probably carried out by Pakistani radicals trying to embarrass the Pakistani government.

It is ironic that the national Sri Lankan Touring Team was in Lahore (East Pakistan) in place of an Indian cricketting squad that had backed out because of security worries.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse, who cut short an official visit to Nepal, has condemned the attack by 14 heavily-armed gunmen carrying assault weapons and rocket-propelled grenades.
7 Sri Lankan players, including their skipper Mahela Jayawardene, were slightly injured, and 6 Pakistani policemen were reported killed in the sustained shooting in Liberty Square,in the commercial district of Lahore.

I thought of connections with the Mumbai incident too BB. It looks like the Pakistani/Indian/Sri Lankan governments still have work to do.

Quite weirdly, I took a cab home from a hospital appointment yesterday and the driver was Sri Lankan. He was excited about the cricket and asked me if I followed the game. Bet he's disappointed now.

On the BBC news earlier, there was an English cricket referee who was caught up in the chaos and he claims that the security was non-existant. He said that when the attack started, there was'nt a policeman in sight. Conspiracy ?
