Peace Convoy gets through... by bIG bLOGGER on 10 March 2009 5:07pm
The 'VIVA PALESTINA' peace convoy led by British RESPECT party MP George Galloway, consisting of 110 vehicles including a fire-engine and ambulances, and carrying medical aid valued at $1.4million dollars, has finally crossed into the Palestinian enclave of Gaza on Monday (yesterday,9th March) after being held up at the Israeli border at Rafah for 2 days while checks and interrogations were carried out by the Israeli border police.
Galloway said he was "full of happiness" and that it was a practical humanitarian response to the 22-day shelling of Gaza which killed 1,300 Palestinians and injured another 5,000.
The convoy had set off from England on February 11th and travelled down France and then through North Africa. In el-Arish(Egypt),45 miles south of Rafah, the convoy was pelted with stones, possibly because Galloway had previously called Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak "an international criminal" for not permanently opening the Rafah border crossing. Palestinian bystanders cheered wildly and waved Palestine green flags as the convoy of vehicles drove through. Bravo!
