SILK ROAD TRAVEL by brianlawrenson on 1 May 2009 4:23am
I've just finished re-reading Michael Palin's Himalaya. I've had it in my library since 2005. In 2007 my wife and I visited so many of the places that Michael did on his journey and we too experienced the highlights of both China, Pakistan, India and Nepal. They are all wonderful countries with amazing cultures full of surpises.

I just loved his descriptions of them twisting their way up the Lowari Pass. We could so relate to the dust, the dramatic scenery and the almost impossible roads. We had the Taliban to contend with but this added a special element of adventure. Sadly Benazir Bhutto was killed two weeks after we left Pakistan and since then the country seems to have spiralled down into violence. You'll find more about this in my book Following Marco Polo's Silk Road.

But don't write Pakistan off. Go to Hunza and the northeast. The people there are friendly and the treking and sightseeing is fantastic.

I travelled though Tibet to Everest basecamp and down to Kathmandu 18 months ago.It really was stunning.

Glad you also had a great time.

On a side note I have also crossed America few times on the trains and swam in the swimming pool in Glenwood springs though it was spring and not Winter LOL.
