Can we please remember Bea Arthur? by mrsteabag on 29 June 2009 8:21pm

She passed about a month ago. She starred in two groundbreaking roles, the title character of "Maude" and Dorothy in "The Golden Girls." Both roles disputed sterotypes of women in midlife. She brought an unerring sense of timing to all that I saw her in. In one of her last interviews, she was asked what sorts of material she had done. She said, "Honey, I've done everything except porn!"
She was a woman of great substance, an activist for social issues, and a fabulous actress. With all due respect to Farrah, I felt that Bea deserved more than thirty seconds for her contributions to drama than two or three minutes on a gossip show. I want to be her when I grow up. She was 86, and her sons were with her when she transitioned.

She also starred in an attempt to do an American version of Fawlty Towers. Her show actually made it past the pilot; the other two attempts didn't.

RIP, Bea. Thanks for the laughs.

My American friend is a Golden Girls fan, I think. Though, I do remember she was upset when she died.

Bea certainly DID have a lot of talent. She had many friends and will be missed.

I certainly remember her in the Golden Girls. She was the tall one who's mother (the tiny one) kept going on about Sicily all the time! I loved the Golden Girls.

R.I.P Bea.

She was a great stage actress too. My gay neighbour saw her in the West End some years ago.

I liked her best on "All in the Family"--she was hysterically funny. Her own sitcom was good, too.

She participated in some Friars' Club roasts wherein they usually "fried" her with jokes about how she was really a man!

She was lovely and talented. RIP

Ooooooh! Does anyone remember , in "Golden Girls," Dorothy's recurring love interest the character played by Jerry Orbach? Now that was inspired casting!
