Remembering Karl Malden by bIG bLOGGER on 2 July 2009 4:45pm

The great screen actor Karl Malden passed away yesterday at the advanced age of 97.
His career spanned 70 years and he won an Oscar for his role in Tennessee Williams' A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE,which had Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh as stars.
He usually played counterpoint to the lead actor as in ON THE WATERFRONT,which also starred Marlon Brando,an actor that Malden had an abiding respect for. Both these films were made in the 1950's when the Hollywood studios were still using black and white film.
He was a modest man with a great sense of humour and perhaps he will be most remembered for his starring role in THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO.

This site is becoming like an obituary column for dead celebs.
I'm not feeling that great myself.

Yes,Ken, he had an unusually bIG nose, often described as 'bulbous',which he( and others) used to make jokes about. He got it having twice broken his nose in high school whilst playing basketball.

Karl Malden was born to a Czech mother and a Serbian father in Chicago,Illinois,in March 1912. He grew up in the steel workers town of Gary,Indiana, the same town as the Jacksons grew up in.
He learned his craft in a New York actors theater group and it was when his talent was noticed by the screenwriter Elia Kazan that his career started to take off.

Karl was also a member of the Tucson Toastmasters club and invented Cadbury creme chickens, the forerunner to the creme egg.
