The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Not so much a 'Glasgow kiss', more like a 'Norwich nuzzle'... by bIG bLOGGER on 24 July 2009 2:44pm
New Labour have been humiliated yet again with the result just announced (at 1:25pm today) that they have lost the Norwich North by-election,being beaten into second place by David Cameron's Conservatives by a wide margin.

This is the first electoral test since the expenses scandal,so it doesn't augur well for New Labour's chances in the next General Election.

The Tory candidate,Chloe Smith, got 13,591 votes to win.
The Labour candidate,Chris Ostrowski, got 6,243 votes to come second.
The Liberal Democrat candidate,April Pond,(great name!)got 4,803 votes to come third.
There were 9 other candidates. Turnout was 45%.

Chloe Smith now becomes the youngest MP in the Commons,at the tender age of 27. She has an amazing majority of 7,348 votes.
Norwich North was previously held (since 1997)by veteran Labour MP Ian Gibson, who had a 5459-vote majority at the last election. This is the 5th by-election blow for Gordon Brown since he took the over the reins at No.10 Downing Street. The Conservatives will be watching eagerly for the outcome of the upcoming by-election,possibly in September,in ex-Speaker Michael Martin's Glasgow North East constituency seat.
