Well here's something I've never heard of, though maybe it isn't a new idea. Transform high rise buildings into farms using hydroponic and aeroponic farming techniques.

Thanks for posting this! I've seen a lot of articles on container gardening and urban farming as a way to bring fresh produce to inner cities, but nothing like this! Very cool indeed.

It is being suggested that flat city rooftops be made into farm space or at least arboretum space in order to fight inner city air pollution. I don't live in an inner city or I'd be more involved! But I hope the idea takes off.

It looks like a good idea. Vertical gardening does take place on a much smaller scale, so why not this too?

The BBC had a news story on this as well. I grew up in a six story apartment building. Mom set up the roof garden.

I can't really imagine vertical farming in a bigger scale. Agriculture is such a highly mechanized process today to be competitive, where a handful of people work with huge machinery thousands of acres. Who shall pay the price for food manly grown by hand care. Green roofs for better city climate, tomatoes and herbs in pots on balconies... yes, but sustainable farming... I don't think so.

I was thinking vertical not just at a higher altitude.

An excellent website on the topic, which includes cutting-edge vertical farm designs:
