Brigadoon! by Miss-M on 3 September 2009 6:30am
I re-watched this wonderful musical a few nights ago. Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse were gorgeous, and Van Johnson was hilarious as a perpetual drunk.

It occurred to me that if Johnny lived in Brigadoon, we'd only have to see him once every 100 years. Fancy relocating, Johnny? ;)

Well Missy, I could relocate to Melbourne and live in the 1950's. Would that do ?

She'd probably think that was s till too close, Johnny. :)

Well, it's not quite the same as living in the 1750s, is it? :)

I think the 1750s would have been fab. The clothes were wash and wear (well actually they were unwash and wear) and cholesterol and cellulite hadn't been invented yet.

And still probably wax and plant stains for make-up. How stunning and practical!

There are two places in Australia called Brigadoon - one is a small suburb in Perth:

The other is normally called Bundanoon, but one day per year they change the town name to 'Brigadoon' and have a big Scottish games there:

The current of the collective subconcious must have been running my way, Missy--I just watched it again, the same day you did! Loved it again. But those dresses--women in the 1700s didn't dress like that! And how come in the whole town there were only two different tartans?

Hollywood has a tendency to "glam up" the costumes, doesn't it mrsthing? For example, in the 1940 version of "Pride and Prejudice" the ladies wore outfits reminiscent of the US Civil War, even though the action was clearly set in early 19th century England. Bizarre! Perhaps they were trying to recreate the gowns from Gone With The Wind? Hmmm...

Yes they sure do. The oompa loompas in the remake with Johnny Depp were totally over the top, real oompa loompas don't wear that stuff at all. In fact they're partial to ugg bioots and ponchos.
