Staffordshire Anglo-Saxon Treasure

I presume most of the UK-based Palinites would've seen on the news about the finding in Staffordshire of a hoard of anglo-saxon gold and silver which is thought to have belonged to a king of Mercia.
As we live not too far away - less than 20 miles - from the Lichfield/Burntwood area where it was found (they won't say exactly where for obvious reasons) - I am going to be dusting off the metal detector.....
:)

You go girl!
Sometimes when an Atlantic wind storm rolls past Florida just right, doubloons and small objects from Spanish and Portuguese shipwrecks come up and then all the "detectorists" come out. |

Well I have never actually DONE it (i.e used a metal detector) but the husband bought one a coupla years ago. He hasn't used it either, by the way.
I would love to find something historical - doesn't have to be treasure like this (though it would be nice!).
I adore history (my degree was mainly historical - or should that be hysterical!) and if we are anywhere historic I am always touching, say, castle walls and feeling the history through them! One or two photos taken of me doing that!
Now, I have just PROVED to you I'm mad, haven't I?
Hahahahaha! |

Well Anne, we have something in common! I love old castles and abbeys etc and love the 'feel' of history in these places. |

Ohh interesting! I love this sort of thing too. When I worked at the British Museum I saw such amazing things, while I was there the museum acquired a coin that an American businessman was trying to buy, they outbid him, the coin was very rare because coins of that sort had not been known to exist before. Imagine finding something like that. |

Oh - so I'm not mad after all - I'm BAD hahahaha!
I love going round really old houses, say 16th or 17th century ones. They are lovely and you can let your imagination run riot (or is that just me?!!).
We are lucky enough in Stafford to have the largest remaining timber-framed house in England. The Ancient High House was built in the 16th century and was visited by Charles 1 (Prince Rupert is alledged to have shot an arrow from one of the windows aiming (I think) at St Chad's Church).
In the early 1970s it had a sports shop in the lower floor (opened by Geoff Hurst no less and yes of course I got his autograph!!), but now it is a museum.
I love the creakiness of the floorboards and the 'smell' of oldness about it. It is just SO atmospheric with narrow stairs etc.
I'll see if I can find a decent link to it.....

Oh, yes, Anne, especially if you know the history about a place. I imagine what the walls could tell me and I can think of being dressed like the ladies of the era and the cooking and their lives. What it's like to get into a bed and start a fire in the fireplace and such. What it would be like to gather berries or things from a garden and see little kids running around. On the other end of the spectrum, famous people and royalty---- the lives they led. Also what it would be like to waltz in a ballroom from years gone by in Vienna. Iit goes on and on....
And Kaz, I wonder how thrilling it would be to discover something very old and valuable too. WOW!!!! |
