Foreign Countrys You Know Well.. by thebookworm on 19 May 2003 10:01pm

Having a lovely wife who happens to be Portugese,I have been very fortunate to visit Portugal 6 times(there certainly will be more Portugese adventures to follow)..After England this is the country that my heart holds dearest,I have been to Lisbon,Sintra,Coimbra,Fatima,Cascais,Meco,,Lisbon is very beautifull, very historic, lots of wonderfull monuments,Sintra has got an Arrabic palace which has breath taking views of the city,Coimbra is a university city very similar to Oxford and Cambridge,Fatima is where the religious pilgrims go to,this place really opened my eyes,Seeing pilgrims walking on there knees is a very humbling experience,Cascais has fantastic beaches, ideal for surfing, or reading a great travel book as you soak up the sun..Meco is by the coast which has unspoilt beaches, where you can do nudist sunbathing(Before you start wondering...Yes I played volley ball in the nude)..But the one thing that really is beautifull about Portugal is the people,I dont think I'll ever meet such a nicer bunch...Have other Palinites got any storys of countrys that they love......David...

I know Germany quite well if that counts, a small German town between Berlin and Hanover called Stendal is like my second home, mainly because my Great Aunts live there
Tangemunde is an amazing place, it's near Stendal and has loads of brick towers, a huge Church (made of brick) and loads of old backstreets leading down to the banks of the wide Elbe.
But I presume you wanted somewhere a little less Westernised?

David,
I have not been anywhere, really. I live vicariously through Michael Palin.
You might want to post this on the "Travel" section. You might get more responses there.
The great adventures I have are in my imagination. Since this is a family show, I'll spare everyone the details. Interesting as they are...
:)
Peace and Great Adventures and a Really Good Book on a Long Train Ride,
Helen

TRy asking everyone to describe the country where they live David - as we have a worldwide palinite community - there should be some interesting answers - not many of us can afford to travel OK
