Our grandson.... by Spursfan on 2 December 2009 3:27pm
....who is 17, has just signed up for the army. The Engineers he said, (presume that is the Royal Engineers?).

I am both horrified (he's only a baby and there are Iraq and Afghanistan to worry about!!) and proud.

I don't know all the details yet but I suppose he'll have to go through a selection process first? Don't think he has yet (and a little voice inside me hopes he fails - shouldn't really think that should I?).

Will keep you posted.

I can understand your worries, Anne, but you must be proud of him, nevertheless.

I agree with Sue. What a good guy he is to want to serve his country. It's a worry on the family's part, but I know you'll all give him lots of support. He's counting on you for that.

O...M...G!! Prayers will be said and candles lit!

Thanks all.

I am especially concerned that his father (our ex-son in law) 'encouraged' him by saying he was useless and it was all he could do!!

[This wonderful father (pah) also told his daughter (our lovely Sophie) to 'f**k off you paki' (Sophie and Simon are 1/8 Asian as are our other grandkids)].

I know Simon is keen to do the best he can, and yes of course we'll support him as much as we can. We'll be proud of him too, but I can't bear the thought...

The good to come of this is an educated and experienced young man when he enters the real world. Country be ****ed. It is a good route for his early steps. To enter armed forces 'to serve your country' is a good way to put yourself at risk.

A friend of mine has a son who is in REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) and that part of the army is lower risk that the front line troops. REME fix and maintain equipment.

Anne, I can understand your concerns about your grandson wanting to join the forces at this time. Any parent/grandparent would feel the same.

*sigh* Similar thing happened here...one of the ladies that I knew from a writers' group has a lovely, sensitive son who was a gifted gymnast. His father berated him for it, and he literally got thrown downstairs for it at school by the football team. He joined the 101st Airborne. I found out about this via grapevine. He's ok, but it saddens me that he felt compelled to do it to prove himself.

101st Airborne is a top notch outfit. I wish him all the best too.
