Foreign countrys I know well by thebookworm on 21 May 2003 10:44pm

Having a lovely wife who happens to be Portugese,I have been very fortunate to visit Portugal 6 times(there certainly will be more Portugese adventures to follow)..After England this is the country that my heart holds dearest,I have been to Lisbon,Sintra,Coimbra,Fatima,Cascais,Meco,,Lisbon is very beautifull, very historic, lots of wonderfull monuments,Sintra has got an Arrabic palace which has breath taking views of the city,Coimbra is a university city very similar to Oxford and Cambridge,Fatima is where the religious pilgrims go to,this place really opened my eyes,Seeing pilgrims walking on there knees is a very humbling experience,Cascais has fantastic beaches, ideal for surfing, or reading a great travel book as you soak up the sun..Meco is by the coast which has unspoilt beaches, where you can do nudist sunbathing(Before you start wondering...Yes I played volley ball in the nude)..But the one thing that really is beautifull about Portugal is the people,I dont think I'll ever meet such a nicer bunch...So what countrys do you know well....David..

I know Spain well. I spent 4 years living in Madrid and I can recommend rowing on the lake in the Retiro or driking beers, lying on the grass in the Plaza de Espana on a hot evening. Romantic weekends can be spent in nearby Cuenca where there are unbeatable views of the hanging houses from the bridge at night and you can stay in the fabulous and inexpensive "La Cueva del Fraile" hotel. Easter is perfect following the processions in Cordoba and mid August sees all night street parties in the La Latina area of Madrid for the festivals of San Cayetano and La Paloma.
I spent a weekend in Lisbon, where the pasteis do Belem are to die for and you can hear wonderful fado for free in La Tasca do Chico.I definitely want to go back there. Any Portuguese people who want to swap homes for a week or two?
