I lost my heart in..... by thebookworm on 21 May 2003 10:48pm

Lisbon. I'm the bookworm's wife and this is where I was born and raised. Lisbon has everything you could wish for, great beaches, great weather, culture, museums, fantastic architecture, food wine...sadly the only thing missing was the bookworm...hence why I moved in search of love....and where did I find him? In cold bloody dirty, bloody noisy london. There you go. Lucy :)

....Kenya. Went there when I was 19 as student (29 years ago) and have been going back ever since. Lived in Kenya on and off for over 8 years and still don't get tired of it despite malaria, dysentry, being robbed at gunpoint and a hundred other adventures. Will probably be buried there one day.

....Kusadasi, Turkey. First went there in 1988 and have been going ever since at least once a year. I was there when 9/11 happened! We have driven all over Turkey apart from the East as at the time they had a lot of trouble there with the pkk and our Turkish friends advised us not to go. Sometimes Turkish people are amazed at where we've been! But we always end up in Kusadasi at some stage.

We've been to a lot of other places - India, Nepal, Mexico, US are examples -
but Kusadasi always seems like home. We've loads of good Turkish friends there - including a family who count us as part of their family (as we do them).

We've taken the time to try and learn some of the language and now can do quite well - though I'm not saying that we can speak a lot we can have a conversation, order food etc at a restaurant and buy things! It helps when we're with the family as we pick up a lot then.

As the years have gone we've seen a lot of change in Kusadasi - not always to the good. They are keen to do what the tourists want, and who can blame them as it is their livelihood, but we certainly don't like seeing signs proudly stating that the cafe sells 'Bisto Gravy', or go to the Queen Vic! A good thing about Kusadasi though is that all the bars, English, Irish and Turkish are on two streets in the town - 'Bar Street' and 'Pub Street' so you can easily avoid them if you wish.

Enough of my rambling!

Ooh, I was in Kusadasi last year. Unfortunately we were only there for a day; I wish it had been longer, but we were part of an organised tour (never again!).

The markets were really something. I love markets. Thailand's have been my favourites so far.

St Wolfgang, Austria. Or rather on the Schafberg mountain above the town. As well as the magnificent view, imagine standing there with an eagle swooping within arm's reach just over your head.... An experience I shall never forget.

Brian, I absolutely adore the Alps. Austria is one of my favorite places too. I drove through St. Wolfgang, but not ascended the mountains there. I have been to many many mountaintops though, in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and France. Also, some lesser mountaintops in the USA. Oh, to be back to those heights! Were you skiing or just climbing or chairlift?

Prague. And Moab. And Iceland. Man, for a lawyer, I've got a lot of heart floating around.
