Multitasking! by Ken Dunn on 27 February 2010 11:08am

I have seen a job advertised which requires that the successful applicant be able to 'multitask'. I have heard this word used but never in a job advert before and to me it is rather silly. It sounds as if the person must be able to do three or more things at once and this is impossible. I can see having responsibility for many things as possible but to be able to do them all at once is daft. Any comments?

It's not daft if you're a woman, we spend our whole lives multitasking.

Kazzzz, that's the most common use of the word that I've come across. Women say they multitask all the time but you can't wash the dishes while vacuuming the living room! And no, I'm not a male chauvinist pig. That's just an example of having to do one thing only when another is finished.

Ken women never stop thinking...stuff at home, work, the kids, planning ahead etc...for example the other day i was running in between the washing, Ava, doing Ray's bookwork and organizing stuff for a playgroup committee meeting. All at once.

My job involved multi-tasking all the time. I could be running/monitoring three different stages of the process at one time. I could watch one stage on a monitor, listen to the pitch of a machine on a second stage to know that all was well, whilst doing a third task.
But I'm a clever clogs. ;)

All I can say is that you must be a woman in drag. Or a transexual.

:)

To me, the word multitasking means being able to switch from one mode/job to another and back and forth until tasks are completed. Some people must finish what they start or they get lost, lose momentum. Multitasking requires quick change of thinking and actions. Do I win a prize for the right answer ken??? ;-)
