Any other Benny Hill fans out there? by mrsteabag on 3 March 2010 1:56am

Just wondering. I was thinking about his take off on "Charlie's Angels" the other day. Sexist? Yes. But he had a good feel for satire, in my opinion. Around the time of the State of the Union address here, I also thought about another sketch he did where the announcer was closing out a speech on the state of the UK. The sketch reflected how I felt that night.

Loved him! Sexist as all hell yes, but that was the point! You wouldn't be able to make a show like that these days, but it was all totally tongue in cheek. I loved the chase scenes. I've been out and about and heard heaps of phones ringing with the theme music as a ringtone too.

It was really sad how he was shunned towards the end of his life because of the beginnings of PC!!

I was all for women's lib at the time (I burnt my bra in the early 70s - well, not actually BURNT it but you get the pic) but even I ued to think it was funny.

I'm sure it all contributed to his early death.

:(

There's a name I haven't thought aobut in a while. Yes, he was a riot alright. But his humor wouldn't fly much today.

Benny Hill's bevy of lovelies were called HILL'S ANGELS,which I suppose must have been a pun on HELL'S ANGELS.

I got a new leather jacket today (on clearance of 60% off!!). When I moved my arms and it squeaked, I started giggling. Made me think of a skit he did where he was meeting a date's father. Benny was wearing a leather suit and the dad had a leather sofa. He squirmed every time the dad asked him a question.

Oh that reminds me that when we got married, in December 1971, "Ernie" was number one. I can remember we used to phone a number and the number one would play, i.e. in this case "Ernie". We did it loads of times (don't know why we didn't just buy the record but still!! Maybe it was a free service, like the speaking clock???).

I can remember to this day standing in the narrow hall of the house in Holloway, North London where our ground floor flat was, both with our ears pressed against the receiver of the payphone!!

Happy days!!

:)
