I saw Alice in Wonderland last night and wrote a review by BethGoth17 on 6 March 2010 10:35am

Alice in Wonderland, as you should know by now, tells the tale of a young girl who goes on a journey to a magical place of dreams which isn’t over the rainbow, but down a rabbit hole. But in Tim ‘Hollywood God’ Burton’s version, she’s back with a vengeance. Behind the 3D glasses, it was visually stimulating and beautiful, almost bursting with colour!

The minor characters, particularly the mad March Hare and Bayard the Bloodhound, were brilliant. The Hare’s famous escapade with the spoon was enough to make anyone scream with laughter (and I’m not afraid to admit…) The star of the show was Mia Wasikowska, the eponymous Alice. She played the role beautifully and I hope to see more of her in the future. Princess Anne Hathaway was definitely not a plucky little princess in this. The elegant, animal-loving White Queen was great, though a little pointless to the story. The Knave of Hearts, AKA George McFly, AKA Crispin Glover was strangely phenomenal and he’s instantly hated. Matt Lucas and Matt Lucas were very nice addition too, and had a couple of nice laughs. The egotistic big-headed Red Queen was beautiful in her own way, in the sense that she was genuinely frightening and slightly annoying. Let’s hope this makes your head even bigger by saying, it’s the best role I’ve seen you play, Helena. Johnny Depp seems to be an acting genius in Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sleepy Hollow but in this, he was mad enough to forget about that. He is not playing the Mad Hatter. He’s just a playing a combination of all his previous Burton roles, with a dash of that insanely annoying pirate in there. If I wanted to see Willy Wonka, I would’ve watched Charlie. Sigh…Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt, mate.

The plot, mostly, was a weak point. In fact, where was it? Down the rabbit hole, perhaps? Being smoked to the death by the Caterpillar? It was jammed full of pointless gore and petrifying violence, if you want to see anything with the kids, it’s best if you avoid this, unless you want to see heads being chopped off and eyeballs being pulled out. But the credits were good. Overall, it was great for murdering a couple of hours, but it was not worth the impatient three-year wait.

Don't take any young kids to see this. I pooped my pants several times!! But yeah. I enjoyed it otherwise :P

Thanks for your review Beth, well written - I am looking forward to seeing the film myself.

One point though - 'insanely annoying pirate'?!! I'll have you know that Captain Jack Sparrow is a wonderful character and, it has to be said, the sexiest thing in Sexydom!!! The Deppster's best creation so far. *Sigh*

:)

BethGoth 17: thank you for your entertaining and animated review of the new Burton/Disney movie ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

As far as I know,a film of this famed Lewis Caroll children's tale has been made before,so I'm not sure why Burton chose to embellish on it.

The film review I read said that the set and dress designs are fabulous;that Mia W.--a young Australian actress--acquits herself OK; that Helena B-C steals the film; and that Mr. Johnny Depp is all over the place with his acting and with his ludicrous different accents, perhaps in a vain attemt to replicate schizophrenia for his Mad Hatter role, but then there was never any evidence that The Mad Hatter in the original book was schizophrenic, just a curious English eccentric, and there are plenty of those about.

And TWO Matt Lucases?? Heavens! ..ONE Matt Lucas is already too much!!

@Anne, are you blind?! Johnny is so...UGLY! The best role he's ever played is Edward Scissorhands. Anyway, I think you'd enjoy that hilarious dance he does :P

@Bigblogger, yes I'm afraid so lol. But I like Matt, so that's OK with me XD And yes, I have to agree. The costumes are amazing. Colleen Atwood is my favourite costume designer :P My mum said Helena was the best one in it and I had to agree!!

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek !!!! *faints*

Are you SURE you've been looking at Johnny Depp, Beth?!! Yes he WAS gorgeous in Edward Scissorhands - however he was even sexier in PotC!! I don't know whether or it's the pirate thing, but he is the perfect man as
Jack Sparrow.

Even in his more 'normal' roles - such as JM Barrie in 'Finding Neverland' - he is sooo handsome.

In real life he is simply devine.

In my humble opinion it is YOU Beth who perhaps needs specs?!!

:)

Then why do I call him Gargoyle? :P I like him, but not because of his nonexistent good looks. You're just like my nan XD She fancies him too.

Talking of Johnny Depp, did you see him and Tim Burton on Jonathan Ross last week, Anne?

Phew! Thanks Kazzzz! For one moment I thought someone had said the Deppster was ugly!! Oh!! They had!!

*faints again*

No I missed it, Sue!! I used to regularly watch JR without fail, but somehow this series I have always been in the study on the computer when it is on!!

I didn't realise until later.

@Anne, I think it's on youtube. It was a bit rubbish, actually. Tim didn't say much at all. It was all about Johnny really. But hey, they got there in time! (I read somewhere that they were almost late!) Oh, and it is indeed on youtube!!
