The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Weird!! by Spursfan on 14 April 2010 4:16pm
The weirdest thing happened today when walking Tosun.

We parked at ASDA and then walked him along the canal path; in fact we were hoping to feed the ducks there but they are too busy nesting at the moment to be interested in stale baps and cake!! So the pigeons had a good feed instead!! Incidentally there are also currently a pair of swans sitting on eggs as there are every year.

The path is a sort of designated walk and on the opposite side to the canal it is landscaped in a bank which rises to ASDA, and beyond.

Going by a particularly 'bushy' part, Tosun strained on the lead to climb up it, which we stopped him from doing. Then I spotted a cockerel amongst the plants!!

We have no idea how he got there, and were unsure whether to tell someone (and if so, who? It was past ASDA so they would not be interested).

I'm tempted to say that you could put an ad in the local paper.

" Free cock down by the canal near Asda. "

Don't think Asda would be pleased though.

There's too much of that going on already down there but the ASDA people just turn a blind eye :)

Contact the RSPCA, Anne. The number is 0300 1234 999. They could give you some advice on what to do.

Get real Sue.

A hungry fox will already be feeding her young on the 'free cockerel'.
Shall we report Mrs Vixen to the RSPCA ?
Re: Weird!! by Spursfan on 15 April 2010 2:42pm
The cockerel was still there when we walked Tosun at lunchtime. I have reported it to the RSPCA (who won't come out unless it is contained). The car wash people at ASDA have reported it to the RSPB.

(It is the river by the way not the canal, d'oh!!).

Oh and someone has stolen, or whatever, the 4 or 5 eggs that the swans were sitting on, since we saw them yesterday lunchtime. The pen is still sitting on the nest and the cob is standing by her.

Well it's a survivor that's for sure. Two weeks ago I seen a pile of swan feathers by the lochside in our local country park, which I assumed was the work of a fox.

Can anyone remember the pics I posted a while ago ( taken by my daughter ) when a pair of swans and their cygnets strolled up my drive and into my back garden ?

Today we walked along the river path especially to check on our pal the cockerel. Still there, but there were a number of people trying to catch him and put him in a box. They gave up in the end. (They were from an office apparently and said they had arranged a farm for him to go to).

Apparently spomeone from the RSPCA had been earlier in the day (this was about 11.30 a.m.) and had given up.

Tomorrow Zak is going to take a large fishing net which he uses in the pond to try and catch him, if he is still there.

When I spoke to a local wildlife rescue place (they couldn't come because they were open to the public and only had 2 staff on) the girl I spoke to said she had had to stop the car to rescue a cockerel herself last week. She said people buy eggs to raise chickens, and when the eggs hatch they find some of them are cockerels so they just abandon them!! This could be what happened to our friend.

At least he is still around! Let's hope Zak will be able to catch him with the net.
