Orion's crossing by mrsteabag on 24 May 2010 9:35pm

If you've not followed the saga on F/B...Orion made his crossing to the next life early Sunday morning. He went peacefully here at home. We had soft music, candles, and a lot of love going on. I was next to him on the floor. He was 13.5, and it was either lymphoma or a systemic infection.
Mr. Teabag took him for a ride in a gardening cart that afternoon, and he had a bit of a rally. Later, he just took a nosedive. The end came fairly quickly and he wasn't in any pain as far as I could tell.
In addition to his lady friend Miley ( girl Brittany with lovely manners--she eats off silverware), Orion loved snow, bananas, sleeping on his back, bananas, long walks, and bananas. He volunteered with frail elderly and Alzheimer's patients, and persuaded many to adopt dogs from shelters and rescue organizations. He was pulled from a shelter an hour before he was going to be put down--no tags, no one had claimed him and his time was up. But he was rescued, and adopted us the next weekend.
Sadness? Yes, but tempered by a great sense of peace that he went out on his terms, and a profound sense of gratitude. Blessings to everyone who sent their prayers and good thoughts.

As you know I have followed this on FB and it is just so sad, but at least he had a last ride round and at the end he had his Mom with him by his side.

Northern Staffordshire Bull Terrier Rescue has this on its site (and I am sure it applies to Orion as well as Staffies!!):

"Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge....

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of us special friends so they can and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our furry friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigour; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing, they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His or her's bright eyes are intent as their eager body quivers with anticipation and joy. Suddenly he or she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, as their legs carry them faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the familiar beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your furry companion, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...."

It makes me cry each time I read it.

Aaaaaaw, Fran. I know what the loss of a loved pet means and how it feels. Crushing, I know. Please accept my deepest sympathies and know my heart is with you. He was a good little doggie and I know how he'll be missed. So glad he wasn't in any pain. Gosh, I feel awful now.

Thanks, (((((everyone)))). We, in the words of the Pythonian sages are getting on with it. Mr. Teabag went to work yesterday. I have been picking up and decluttering here and there, and have errands to run today.
Marianne Williamson, a spiritual writer I love, created a prayer for the end of the day with the line, "May only the love remain." It's going to take a little while to get to that point. But you guys are proof it will get here. :)

As I've already said to you Fran, I know that you doted on him and I'm sorry for your loss. He had a good innings and a happy life.

Anyway, wanna free kitten ? It'll keep you awake at nights and mess on your rugs but...hey!, you'd be doing a friend a favour. :)
