County Show by Spursfan on 3 June 2010 8:36am

Well, today is the second day of this year's County Show and already I can hear the loudspeakers going (it is 08.21 as I write). We live exactly a mile by road away from the County Showground - I used to have to go to evening meetings there as part of my job and had to clock it for my mileage claims - but of course it is nearer over the fields.

The biggest nuisance about it is the traffic!! It is HELL getting into and out of Stafford for the 2 days it is on - we can go two ways from the village into Stafford and the way that goes past the Showground is often busy as they have things like antique shows, motorbike shows and things like that on. But when the actual County Show is on FORGET IT!!

I used to have to work at the County Show itself (in the County Council tent) and I can tell you I LOATHED it!! The only good thing was that it was away from the office but it was tiring and boring! Obviously we had free entry as we were working and also meals but even so.

I understand the entrance fees this year are £14 per adult, £5 child, and £12 senior citizens, with £32 for a family ticket!! Why on earth people pay these prices to look at tractors and other farmy things is beyond me!! And generally it rains for the two days (they were lucky this year!) so there's loads of mud.

On the other hand, when I was there it was sometimes better if it rained because at least then you had loads of punters to talk to, whereas if it was hot and sunny the last thing they wanted to do was go into a marquee!!

[And I can remember that when I was at school all the girls who had Dads who were farmers had a day off during the County Show!! NOT FAIR!! Pffffft!]

How many words, Johnny??!! :P

it's the same here Anne, we have the Melbourne Show each year. After you pay for petrol, parking, entry fee and then the exorbitant price of rides ( last time I went about $12 a go) drinks and food at unbelievable prices you are a few hundred dollars out of pocket, making it impossible for a family to afford to go. Even the showbags can cost over $20, they used to be called sample bags and were free. Ruined now.

I usually take annual leave to go to my part of Wales every year when the County Show is held there. I love it! So much to see and do. I must admit though the entrance fees can be a bit steep, although I could become a member like my sister and pay a lot less.

The only similar thing I've attended is The Royal Highland Show at Ingleston, Edinburgh.
The entrance prices this year are £20 for an adult. It was years ago that I was there ( my bro-in-law was involved in farming ) but I can remember that the prices of refreshments etc was sky high.

One good thing I will say for it is that sometimes they have air displays so we get a good view in our garden! So we have had single planes doing aerobatics, and we've had fly pasts of spitfires and Lancasters.

One year they had the Red Arrows and they were doing their display right overhead as we sat in the garden!!

Or actually that might have been a display for the RAF base just up the road (it's now MOD snd the Ghurkhas are stationed here). I can't remember which!!

:)

We're about a mile from our fairgrounds. It's not bad, except for demolition derby night and some of the concerts. It's more disconcerting with one set of neighbors who have an illegal fireworks show every Fourth of July. :P
