The Chatter Box : Welcome and Introductions
Hello from NYC by dormouse72 on 27 June 2011 1:29pm
I only found this website last night but have watched his travel videos for years on YouTube and now Netflix. I've done a fair bit of travelling in my life (mostly because my mother worked for an airline so in exchange for her low salary we got very nice travel perks - this was back in the day, of course). When I was a child I loved it but didn't appreciate how much it made me stand out from my peers (everyone one else talked about going to Disney World while I went touring down the Rhine). In university, I went to school in Dublin for a while and did some studying in Louvain/Leuven in Belgium; from there my friends and I branched out all over Europe. In the US I've lived in DC and Philadelphia as well as in Cajun Country near Alexandria, Lousisiana. I didn't travel much for past the Jersey shore or Florida for a while (my ex wasn't much of a wanderer) but after we split up I made it a priority to get back out on the road, this time with three young kids in tow. Our first "girls trip" was a drive up to Quebec City when my girls were 8, 4, and 1. I was lucky enough to meet up with another single mom with two girls the same ages as mine also going through a divorce. After a disaterous vacation at the Jersey Shore (where she spent thousands of dollars and felt cheated), she called me and said "We could go to the Carribbean for less than this". And we did the next year - taking all 5 girls to the Dominican Republic for a week for much less. Since then we've taken the girls away together every year - mostly places where all-inclusives were looking to give us kids for free. We've gone back to DR (twice), Jamaica (twice), and now back to Mexico, with a cruise to Bermuda snagged at the right moment thrown in. She was also married to a man who would rather spend $$$ on custom-made suits than travel so now she and I take our "Mom's Run Away" vacation every year - in the past 7 years we've gone to Vegas, a cruise to Canada, cruise to Turks & Caicos, St. Lucia, DR, Mexico, and now we're looking at a cruise to Belize. I'm also not ashamed to admit I'm a Disney nut and even though it's cheaper to go to the Carribbean, I still manage to squeeze some "Time with the Mouse" in. This year, we are taking "the boys" along as well - we've both fiinally met men who are willing to go along with our "have toothbrush and passport, when do we leave?" lifestyle-of-choice (which is pretty amazing in my case as he'd never been on a plane before he met me - now he has a passport and the KAYAK app on his phone). Now that the kids are older, we'd like to start branching out with our destination choices - we just need fuel prices/airfares to go along with the plan!!!

Welcome dormouse72. I hope you'll stay and enjoy the website. I am just down the road from you, in Connecticut.

Originally I am from Ireland, we just got back from a 5 day trip there in May. I am delighted that Dublin made your list as one of the places you'd like to return to. I am from Galway myself.

I hope you'll stay visiting all the places that you love and this website will become one of them!

Greetings from someone in Arizona now, who is Brooklyn born and bred. Makes for an interesting combination of Brooklyn accent and cowboy boots and hat.
I am still a New York Mets fan for baseball, but also a Boston Red Sox fan (cause I married into it).
