The Chatter Box : The Series
80 Days and other series on Blu-Ray by weegee on 31 January 2012 6:34am
I first watched this series on television when it first aired in the United States in 1989. It was shown on the A&E channel and when it was repeated again, with slightly more content per episode (due to its overwhelming popularity, I suppose) I taped it at high quality (SP on the VCR) and have those tapes to this day. When the DVD box set came out of all of Michael's TV specials, I bought that a few years ago and will never part with it.

I am particularly hoping to see these released in Blu-Ray, and would buy them in a heart beat if they were to appear. But a search just now came up empty, sadly.

Can you describe any additional scenes from the airing of 80 days that were shown on the A&E Channel that you recorded on VCR?

I noticed on the 80 Days end of episode 2, when Micheal's luggage is put in the trunk by the porter, that the lid of the trunk does not shut completely, so Michael pushes the trunk lid shut before getting in the car.

In Episode 3 the scene is repeated, but this time the porter shuts the lid completely. It is ironic that the one scene repeated in the series, was a different take. I wonder if this was done on purpose or if it was one of those things that wasn't noticed in editing.

I must of watched the series 10 times and finally I noticed it. I like the scene where Michael has to finish shutting the trunk lid, because it demonstrates how you have to watch everything while traveling since so many things can go wrong.

Do the VCR tapes have this same scene done two different ways?

I would love to see them on blu-ray and I think even the early shows (80 days) were shot on film so there is some merit in a blu-ray release. Brazil looks great on blu-ray, New Europe had no blu-ray release but was broadcast in HD and that looks great also.
The UK blu-ray of Brazil is 1080i60 so not all USA blu-ray players will play it. My panasonic player (from Canada) handles it ok though.
