Capoeira by Loretto on 16 February 2012 12:33am

Just got back from covering a story about a type of group fitness class that I have never even heard of before.

It hails from Brazil and was a martial arts class disguised as a dance class by slaves.

The name means short grass, which in itself was a disguise to slave owners who thought that the slaves were simply dancing in "the short grass" but they were really practicing martial arts and combat moves.

It involved doing a song and chant, break dancing type moves, in fact this is what break dancing derived from. The instructor also used an instrument which the group practiced their moves to and chanted to.

I have to say it was interesting to watch them do it.

Yes, it was interesting to see it being done. A nice part of Brazillian history too, well kind of, nothing about slavery was "nice" but I liked learning about how the words used to describe moves etc, cloaked the real meaning; that the slaves were practicing self defense moves to protect themselves against the slave owners. And you could most definitely see how it has influenced break dancing. When you see a class it is part martial arts, part music, part singing and chanting and part dancing. Very cool.

I just hash tagged Michael Palin on Twitter (No need to worry Michael, I am just your harmless, garden variety stalker) and this came up.....

And here's your chance to win Brazil, the book, not the country. Somebody else already won that!

Himself above will be doing some Capoeira in the Brazil series!!! Cool! Can't wait to see that!
