Baby dies in ambulance by Spursfan2 on 20 July 2012 7:33pm
After all the problems at Stafford hospital, the A & E depoartment has been closed overnight for some months. In emergencies during the night we as locals would have to be taken by ambulance (or travel ourselves) to either Stoke or Wolverhampton, both approx 15 miles away (I am talking about the cities, the relevant hospitals are further - as I have been there I happen to know that the University Hospital of North Staffs is nearly 20 miles away). We are 3 miles fronm Stafford Hospital.

Now today we hear of a baby who became seriously ill, and was first refused access to the children's dept at Stafford (as they were already treating a seriously ill child and another reason I have forgtotten) and then refused access to the A & E (as it was during the time it was closed). The baby lived 2.5 miles from Stafford Hospital, but the decision was made to take her to Stoke. Sadly she died on the way.

No-one can say that the baby would not have died anyway, but surely she would have stood a better chance at Stafford if she stopped breathing than in an ambulance on the M6 at 80 mph?

Those of us who have campaigned for the reopening of the A & E Dept full-time have often said that the closure would cause deaths.

Sadly we have been proved right.

Fuel for why Americans so fear your system of health care.
