Milky way over the Bungle Bungles by ev on 19 September 2012 1:02am

The Bungle Bungles are a low mountain range in Western Australia:

Just out of interest, here's another photo of the Milky Way that you can click on for more detail. The centre of our galaxy is somewhere in the bright bit in the top left (also seen just left of centre in the Bungle Bungles photo). Just click once to zoom in, then use your arrow keys to move around...:

Just think, each one of those white dots is either one of the 200 billion stars in our own galaxy, or a complete galaxy which in turn contains anywhere from 10 million to 100 trillion stars.

Present estimate for the total number of stars in the (currently observable) universe? Approximately:
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (That's one septillion).

Now imagine how many other planets there might be, considering that there are about 10 planets going around our star (the Sun).

"Mind if we 'ave your liver, then?"

Great Picture. My favourite times in Oz was laying back in the Outback looking at the sky at night. and, when you have had a bottle of wine, put the binoculars to your eyes, its, WOW-TIME!

Thanks ev. I thought I felt like myself today, but I feel very small again.

The picture taken over the Bungle Bungles is a masterpiece.

Fantastic pics. Too much pollution in London to see the stars.

The Bungle Bungles are on my list of places to visit.

Now try to repeat 'The Bungle Bungles' out loud quickly five times...
