HS2 by Spursfan2 on 11 March 2013 6:56pm

This is a website set up by members of our village - the only village in the UK, by the way, which will be split in two by HS2.

(For those not in the UK, HS = high speed train, planned for 20 years time approx. HS2 is the section from London to Manchester/Leeds.

Good to hear it's a proposed transportation development. I initially read it as H2S, which is such a foul-smelling gas that by the time you wrinkle your nose...you're dead!
Re: HS2 by suzulu on 12 March 2013 1:11am
It will be very noisy and will split a community. Is your house far from the proposed route, Anne?
Re: HS2 by Lounge Trekker on 12 March 2013 1:15am
That's a very good point, Sue. Lobby for as many safe crossings as you have through streets. Tracks through a town can cause the quality of life to deteriorate as commute times increase although the services do not.
Re: HS2 by Spursfan2 on 12 March 2013 9:02am
It is only a tiny village, Sue with (at present!!) no shops, pubs, clubs or even street lighting so you can imagine the impact.

We are far enough away for it not to affect us physically - but less than a mile I would think - but the expected drop in house prices will, of course. The last 3 photos of the proposed HS2 route on the above site were taken around the corner from us; it is a lovely view (at the moment).

And it isn't even as if we would benefit from such a service as it is not, I understand, even STOPPING in Staffordshire!!

Twenty years is a long time I know, but already it is having an impact on house prices. Long before then we hope to have sold up and moved semi-permanently to Turkey, but how much will we lose?!

Re: HS2 by suzulu on 12 March 2013 3:50pm
That is very depressing. Maybe they will shelve the plan if enough people protest (she says, hopefully!).
Re: HS2 by Lounge Trekker on 12 March 2013 8:13pm
I'm sorry you have to go through this, Anne.
Re: HS2 by TERRY S on 13 March 2013 2:01am
No offense, Anne, but Britain needs HS2. We invented the railway and yet compared to countries like Japan our railway network is still in the dark ages. We need to get into the 21st centuary with our rail network. The sooner the better. This has been too long in coming. and I frankly can't wait.
Re: HS2 by Spursfan2 on 13 March 2013 12:02pm
Well, I tend to agree with you Terry - I can't wait for it either BUT it is such a shame that a beautiful village like Hopton will be changed. Not to mention the money aspect which of course is important.

The thing is, Hopton is the ONLY village that is being affected - and it would not take much ingenuity for the route to be changed. I am not saying towns will not be affected, but certainly, according to the protest group it is the only village.

I know we are reacting like NIMBYs (not in my back yard) but when you see house prices ALREADY affected (and one couple pulled out of buying a house in the village because of the announcement) TWENTY YEARS before it happens, you can see our concerns (I perhaps ought to add that Hopton is considered a desirable place to live and is on the green belt)
Re: HS2 by Loretto on 13 March 2013 5:48pm
Wow, some of the track is literally in people's backyards!!! That's unfortunate. And the house prices dropping by 25%, that's a huge loss.

It couldn't be done in the middle of the field, way off in the woods, why I wonder?
