Fires in BC, Canada see over 40 000 people evacuated from their homes

My hometown was evacuated Saturday. My parents were force to leave town in a thousand-car motorcade towards Kamloops. My parents arrived there at about 2 am, after leaving late afternoon.

Sounds like a forest fire LT. Are you and your home OK now? (Your link doesn't work but I'll Google it to find out more). |

It's a very bad situation you have there LT. Keep me/us posted when you can. I see the Aussies have also been called in to help. Are you able to join the firefighters as a volunteer when your family are safe? |

Keeping your family safe is enough. They'll be a bit traumatized so will need you around. |

They are safe in Kamloops, staying with friends. That friends can house them is a good thing as the emergency shelters are near capacity with evacuees that need them.
So far, their home hasn't been damaged and cooler weather has allowed fire-fighting crews to control more of the fires. They were forced into an evacuation order because only one highway remained open. 327 000 hectares have been burned. That's 3270 square kilometres in 667 fires across the province...higher than the 1844 average burnt in the past ten years. BC has a land area over 920 000 square kilometres. What makes this year different is that a few of these fires threaten communities and the highways in and out.

Update
100 Mile House, a long hour south of Williams Lake, has been cleared for the return of the populace. They have been out of their homes for nearly two weeks.
WL is expected to take longer for it's re-opening. One reason is the fire situation. Another is the number of people and complexity of essential services will take longer to get up and running. |
