Living in London...suggestions please! by Marianne on 30 December 2003 12:05am
I can't really make up my mind as to which area is best for a two month stay. I'll be living in an apartment or house and want to experience actual "city living." I've narrowed down a bit, but, would like advice from the group. Please sound off with your thoughts. All of the areas are very close to one another, but the neighborhoods have very different personalities. Areas under consideration are Westminster, Fitzrovia, Covent Garden, and Marylebone and Mayfair. I'd love to know what everyone thinks. Also, is there anything that I simply "must do" while in the city?

Gee, you must be on a bit of a budget to consider living in any of those areas...

As someone who has lived and worked in London now for 20 years my choice of the areas you mentioned would be Covent Garden, it's at the heart of the West End (the entertainment/cinema/theatre part of the city). But of course without knowing you or your tastes it's not an easy question to answer.

As to 'must dos' same applies. Being a water-lover myself I'd suggest a canal trip (The Regent's canal, Camden) and a walk along the Thames from Tower Hill to Canary Wharf. Oh, and a trip on the London Eye.

Thanks for the advice. When you say a bit of a budget, can you be more specific? Are you saying that these are very inexpensive places or more expensive places? I have a pretty large budget for housing. I can afford up to $1000 per week.
