Stereotypes by Godfather on 4 January 2004 2:19pm

We all have stereotypes and expectations about countries before we've actually visited them. From movies, books, and news reports. When the majority of people hear the word "India", unfortunately the first thing that comes into their mind is 9/10 - "Disease and poverty". Not quite the whole story. Mention "Pakistan" and the first thing that jumps into most people's mind is "Guns, fanatics, and intolerance". Again, not the whole story by any means. Implanted into the western mind by it's media. All stereotypes have at least some basis in truth of course. But usually they're way unbalanced and dont take into account many other aspects. Think "Cambodia" and the memory in most people's mind in the UK is of Pol Pot, and famine.

A list of countries and your pre-concieved expectations about them are always very intersting to read to get an idea of the kind of influences we've been exposed to in our life. As i've travelled quite a lot now, many of them have been erased when i've seen the truth. But i still remember some of my old ones. It also occurs with people in other countries too. Many people in India for example still have a stereotype of the English Gentleman, taking afternoon tea. In China, they think we all go around with black umbrellas. So it exists everywhere. :)

Anyone wish to list some they had (or still have) ?

I do know that not all Aussies are like Steve Irwin, bless your hearts...
:)
I'm American, and I've never held a gun. But, I used to own a pick up. It was brown and rusty and I loved it!
and I am also guilty of getting a really bad perm in the 80's.
(tominator and Kazz-- your exchange made me smile!)
