Michael Palin should do trip through every continent by spursrule on 5 January 2004 12:35pm

After Sahara and now Himalaya, the trips don't seem to be epic enough, perhaps a final trip could be to travel to every contintent in half a year.

How cool would that be?

Oddly enough,i think this approach of scaling things down,is much better. I think they've done the Epic thing to death now. Pole to Pole, Around the world, Full Circle, Up and down, Walking backwards across Europe,Hopping from one end of Asia to the other. It's gets all a bit too much of a novelty sooner or later, and you start wanting to slow down and get a deeper experience of each country you visit. I'm someone now known for spending up to 3 weeks in a small town somewhere when travelling. We can whisk through multiple continents and just skim the surface. It gives you lots of variety, but is simultaneously very superficial. We just dont learn enough. We dont have time, and we dont have time to talk to locals. Just stopping and waiting, gives us many opportunities to observe and learn from the cultures, make local friends and really get into the feeling of local life. Epic trips are fun,but most people who buy these "Round the world" tickets, regret bying them,as they often feel rushed and wished they'd stayed in one particular region for a longer time. That's how i've become anyway. I used to visit several continents on my early trips. Now i'll spend a couple of months or so just in one country. You start desiring that instead as you know how much deeper the experience becomes. I think Michael desires that too now,as you always heard him on the earlier programs saying he wished he'd had more time but felt pressured to get a move on to the next destination. I think that's why we're getting more localized and focused series now.

I suppose you are right, I have not even seen all of Pole to Pole yet and none of Full Circle so perhaps after I see those I will feel the same way as you.

On another note, I think the cameramen do not get enough credit, and without them we would not be able to enjoy the splendid views on offer. I was particularly impressed by the shots in the 80 Days DVD, and it makes you feel like you are actually there.

The Epic trips are nice, and a good way of giving the viewer an idea of each place,so that they'll make up their own mind which region takes their fancy if they intend to go travelling. I suppose that in a way it could be good to do a RTW ticket on early travel, now that i look at it from a different perspective. It makes sense i guess,to spend a short time in each region and then you'll quickly find out which region clicks with you most. Then you can go back at a later date and can explore that region further. I dont know which region is Michael's favourite (A topic for his to answer perhaps?). I just remember Michael saying in his early series that he always felt frustrated at having to be bumped along to the next stop just as things were getting exciting and he was learning about each place. Full Circle was indeed Epic, but they spent a lot of "quality" time in each region. I like that series. Pole to Pole was a bit rushed at times, i felt. It seems like travel in Africa is slow and tough enough without having to make certain dates for ships later on,too. So it must of been hard work as well as frustrating for Michael. I think the "region" series will turn out to be more rewarding for the viewer now (aswell as for Michael).

i think that as micheal progresse`s round the world the series seem to be getting better and better but i think that he should have another attempt at pole to pole as it seemed such a great disapointment that he made it so far just to fall short at the final hurdle.I think that the idea of travelling around all the contents is good as it would enable micheal to visit even more countries and experience even more than he already has

I think Michael is less interested in the "race for time" type travel series now. He's easing off and taking time to really appreciate "regions" in depth instead. I find that the best approach (and it's how i travel now also). The "Quick..quick" series with quirky goals like Pole to Pole and 80 days, are lots of fun. But they only skim the surface of each country. Full circle (although it was indeed an epic) went quite deep in each country visited.

I would like to see Michael do a tour of South America and North America in more detail, maybe do it in 250 days or something like that ;)

Hey all,

If Michael wants a volunteer to do a trip to every continent I'd do it. :-)

I just found this site recently after seeing Around the World in 80 days (missed the first 3 or 4 episodes) and Pole to Pole (which finished tonight). I've loved both series so far and hope they keep them coming.
