chillin in the Baltic States by intrepid on 23 February 2004 7:18pm

Hi-
Can anybody tell me anything about Lithuania and Latvia? I'm thinking about possibly going to those there in the next few weeks- they are sort of nearish countries which I haven't been to, and I figure that it probably isn't the high tourist season. I guess there are some Jewish heritage sights to see in Vilnius, Lith., but beyond that I don't know anything. Has anybody been there?
Plan B is seeing that big chunk of Hungary outside of Budapest- specifically Gyor, Pecs and Miskolc. Does anyone know about these places? Does anyone know how to pronounce these places? Thanks- David

Hey Intrepid.

I've been to Riga & Vilnius in 2001. The whole old town of Riga is World Heritage listed and is really nice. Unfortunately I can't remember that much as I was there on Sept 11 2001 - spent the whole afternoon watching CNN in the hotel. Vilnius is also a nice city but a great place outside the city to visit is Trakai Castle. Built on an island in a lake it was fantastic. My fav. part though was sailing around it relaxing for a few hours.

I totally agree with dave: Trakai is a must. The lake and the small islands are a real sight.

As for Godfather's comment: Please estimate the number of immigrants - who come from the new EU countries - you think you'll meet from May the 1st through a year!

Thanks for the tips! I'll see if Trakai is open. I've been spending a lot of time trying to find out how to get around Lithuania and Latvia- the trains seem to be pretty slow, and I can't get the info I want about the bus schedules on any webpages I look at. Any suggestions? And how do you pronounce that place in Lithuania which has a name like 'Siailiui?'- David
