What do you do if you have the common cold? by Izot on 7 March 2004 1:34am

I'm three days into mine, hoping it's going to clear before school tomorrow... I've tried everything: oranges, excessive amounts of water, "vaoprub" (vaporising ointment), cough lollies, sitting out in the sun, taking it easy, etc... NOTHING'S WORKING!!!

What do you do? Do you have any home remedies? Old wives' tales about cures? I'll try anything... I hate being sick... :(

I drink my favourite drink.....whisky.
It gets rid of a sore throat.

Very funny. I'll just run to my local liquor store... by Izot on 7 March 2004 12:28pm

I'm 16.

Whisky won't work for me.

Anything else? =D

VODKA! Erm, no.

Working in a chemist, there are absolutely LOADS of common cold products. If you have a cough try Covonia. If you have a sore throat try Strefen (not if you're asthmatic, or allergic to ibruprofen try Dequacaine). If you have a runny nose. go to the chemist and ask their recommended one. None of them really work so its your money. If you want something to knock you out at night, try Night Nurse but it didn't work on me.

I agree with Amy.

Mankind ("and womenkind"....."Alright Stan") have been trying to find a way to speed up the process of natural healing in the case of a cold, for centuries. The one thing people "rarely" ever do thesedays,is let nature takes it's course in it's own time, and just relax and accept that a cold is there. We've lost the art of waiting and just letting it be.

Nothing really helps speed up the recovery process of a cold. All the medicines out there are just placebo effect in a sense. Or they mask the symptoms in an in-flammatory way,or drying up the mucous membranes. They make you "feel" like it's speeding things up. May help in the short term. But often it lulls people into a false sense of security, and they go back to work when they're still not cured. Then the fatigue hits them again big time.

Research has shown that many many of these expensive concoctions out there on the market, actually have very little scientific evidence of speeding up the process of curing a cold. They just mask symptoms or relieve them. From a legal point of view, nobody should use Cold cure on their packaging. And if you look carefully, none of them actually do. "Cold and Flu" (for example). SO what?. All it does is mask the symptoms. But they'd like you to "think you're taking a cure drug.

The best things to do (imo) are just to stop worrying about it (firstly) and rest up in bed. It wont speed things up. But it makes a lot more sense than running around and getting increasingly worried why you still have the cold. The psychological let go,helps a lot. If you are going to take anything then paracetamol is good enough really.

Are you really 15, Tominator?

Yes, Godfather, he's my other toyboy after Rupert Grint *grin*

Actually, you shouldn't take paracetemol if you have a cold. You might want to try some natural remedies. I know there are alot of people who don't believe in the holistic approach to health but hey, did you know manuka honey took the sting out of coldsores? I did, cos i've done it! :P
