The Chatter Box : The Series
Meeting Michael in Dhaka by bermange on 15 March 2004 3:20pm
There I was in the reception area of my hotel in Dhaka working on the TV coverage of the Under 19 Cricket World Cup.

Suddenly a chap caught my eye - "Gosh - doesn't he look like Michael Palin" I said to one of my colleagues. So - like a star-struck teenager I said hello and introduced myself.

Like us, he was dodging the hartals (all day strikes called by the opposition party) but it was great to finally meet the man.

And Michael - if you are reading this - I hope you enjoyed your meal at "The Heritage" as much as we did! Tommy Miah is some chef!

Alas no pix, but I do have a signed letter from the man himself which has pride of place here in my flat in Bristol. I was keen to try to get him to one of the matches - even to commentate for a bit - but the filming schedule had been delayed due to the strikes so there weren't enough days left.

I figured it was fairly safe to approach him as it was not as though he was fighting off hoards of people. In fact I tried to explain to other members of our TV crew (admittedly most of whom were from Asia) about his different series and I even received blank looks when I mentioned Monty Python.

Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh - a completely mad place - watch the series in October to find out exactly how manic it is! His presence actually made the local paper - mentioning that a BBC crew was around filming.

I fear I will have to join the queue to be his young assistant / bag carrier though!

I get the job of hair and make-up... I figure that's as close as anyone would physically get whilst filming =D

I always associate Dhaka with veeeeery long waits (up to 7 hours) in their transit lounge, as i'm always taking flights between Calcutta and Bangkok. Biman airlines (Bangladeshi) stops there for a pause, which often gets out of control and you're there for half the night. If anyone else knows it,it's chaotic and you have to just push in around that circular desk and wave your passport to get attention. Every passenger on every flight coming in, arrives at this tiny little circular desk and it's just sheer chaos. You've got to be ruthless to get seen to. I wonder if Michael will show it on his series. It's quite a transit area..hehe
