round europe in 6 months? by davidm on 23 April 2004 5:56pm

in the (very) early stages of planning a six month trip round europe. the only stipulations are that the journey starts in scotland and i have to be in germany 6 months later.

anyone fancy suggesting a route/some must see places.

i'd like to get through as many countries as possible and be pretty flexible so when i find somewhere i like i can hang around a while

just to point out, i've been to a few of these countries on holiday already (france, switzerland, spain, greece) but that doesn't mean i don't want to return to some of them.

all suggestions would be most welcome. like i said this is a while away so the more i have to work with the better.

well if I was going, Prague/Bohemia and Saint Paul de Vence on the French Riviera would be on my list. Try this link for info- both have history and beauty.

Davidm, you may have been to many of the countries already, but I'm sure you would see and do different things this time. I've been to the Alpine countries many, many times, among many other countries too, and have experienced new things and seen different places each time. So I suggest you do the same and not merely try to step foot in a new country simply to add to a list of places you've visited. You'd only be cheating yourself.

Try Austria, a truly gorgeous and history and culture-filled former empire. And what's wrong with Luxembourg and Leichtenstien and Italy. The two former are small but still offer beauty and interest.

It's hard to suggest what to do, if one doesn't know what you've already done. More information from you would help others make suggestions in greater detail without going to lots of trouble only to find you've already covered that area. Can you help us in that area?

I live in Britain. I envy anyone doing a Europe trip for that length of time. Europe is right on my doorstep, but the costs involved in an indepth trip all around it,just bar me from doing it at this time (i'm not one for short trips of a few weeks. I like to be away for months on end). So i tend to go to cheaper areas of the world for my long trips. I dream of the day when i would be so loaded that i could really go to town in somewhere like Italy and be a classy traveller. I'm still a low budget backpacker type. Oh well, one day you may see me enjoying a fine Cappuchino, wearing designer shades in a classy italian Plaza cafe.

People i've met while on the road, reccommend "Eastern" Europe too. Due to ongoing conflict, some countries are still off limits or dangerous to enter. But if you've got the adventurous side, they sound like fascinating places indeed. Good luck :)

Yugoslavia, or it's former 6 republics of which it was comprised, is a great choice, as is Hungary. I loved them both and would recommend them to everyone!

ok, so far it's basically been short city breaks for the reason of costs mentioned by 'Godfather' - so I've been to Paris, Zurich, Amsterdam doing the standard tourist stuff you see in a major city. eiffel tower, van gogh museum etc.

i'd like to see some more of europe's big cities, but not only that. i'd like to see more of the country too. places like the alhambra in southern spain appeal a lot.

anything historical would definitely be an attraction.
