Chennai and environs by tumanako on 20 May 2004 1:48am
Hello everyone - It looks like I'm going to be living in Chennai, India, work-related, for 6 months or so starting this fall. I'd love to hear recommendations, advice, good stories, anything! I'm thilled to be going, want to try everything humanly possible - many thanks in advance!

Check out Kanchipuram. Not far from Chennai. It's a fascinating temple town. Many many ancient temples still operating. If you have weekends, then nip over to places like Mysore with it's Maharajas palace, and Madurai (site of the Sri Meenakshi temple,a true wonder of the world)

Pictures of Sri Meenakshi, below.

If you're going to be there for 6 months, then i'm sure you'll get sick of temples pretty quickly. For nice days out, there is Mahabalipurum which is on the coast. Dont count on sun bathing with privacy or anything like that. You dont find privacy anywhere in India apart from in your hotel room (and even then, somebody is always curious what you're up to and if you want anything to eat or drink). But Mahab is a chilled out spot. The whole state of Tamil Nadu is interesting full stop. It was my first stop on my first visit to India a few years back, and just blew me away as it's so traditional and bizzare. The food is great (Thalis are wonderful down there) and people are more laid back that in the North of the country. Tamil Nadu has many areas such as hill stations too,if it's getting too hot when you're there (and by god it can get hot in Tamil Nadu's hot season). If you have a bit more time, then nipping over to Kerala State, will give you the beaches and tropical breeze. Kerala has backwaters, and several beaches that cater for foriegners.

Hi - thanks for the tips, and those photos are fantastic! I've always imagined India as sensory overload - people, colors, smells, movement - curious to see what 6 months of that does to my New England-adjusted brain. I'll pace myself on the temples. I lived in Europe for many years as a kid, and my parents took us, I think, to look at every church in every country on the continent. Can't repeat that... Thanks again!
