Travel Essays (Backpack Nation) by stephlynne on 16 June 2004 12:59am

I have been selected as a finalist in a travel essay contest, the theme of which is generosity through travel. $5000 will be distributed to charitable causes in developing countries, and you have the opportunity to help decide how it will be distributed.

The contest is being run by Backpack Nation, a non-profit organization which allows individual travelers to donate money to causes they support throughout the developing world. Out of forty-five submissions, my essay was chosen as one of the twenty finalists. All twenty final stories are posted on the Backpack Nation web site, from now until August 1. The public can read them, and then vote via e-mail for their five favorite essays. The authors of the five essays that receive the most votes will each be awarded $1000, preferably to be used to help people in a developing country.

My essay, entitled “Bus Stop,” recounts an incident which occurred when my husband Craig and I visited Peru in 2002. We were able to provide a ride home to a group of schoolchildren, and it taught us so much about their determination and commitment to education, against all hardships. If we are lucky enough to win one of the $1000 grants, we would use it to help fund transportation to and from school for the children in the mountains of Moray, Peru. If logistics prevent this, we would donate the money to the school directly.

This is not a shameless plug trying to get you to vote for my essay. I have read all twenty of the final essays, and they are all wonderful. Each author has a clear vision of how they would use the money to help make the world a better place. $5000 will be distributed by Backpack Nation, and you have the opportunity to help decide how it will be distributed. I invite you to read the essays and vote for up to five of your favorites here:
