  The Chatter Box : Travel
Thailand by emartin on 3 July 2004 9:12pm
I'm going to be heading to Thailand in September for a volunteer placement in the Petchburi province. I was wondering if anyone has explored this area or heard anything about sights, accomodations, etc. I know it's near Cha-am and Hua Hin beaches. I'll be there for three months so I may do some other traveling as well. Any advice would help! Thanks!

Hi fellow volunteer

I'm also doing a volunteer project, in Costa Rica for a month next January and am going to be building homes for the local inhabitants. Which organisation are you going with? with regards to Thailand spent a month touring around back in 2001 and am going to Bangkok and Hua Hin this November. Found a really good website called wireddestinations.com (thai website)for which there are loads of cheap and not so cheap acomodations from hotels to beach bungalows. There is plenty to do in this area and is a good central base for your stay. Get yourself a lonely planet guide.

If you are going to be in Thailand for 3 months make sure you do Bangkok,Chang Mai/Chang Rai,Kanachaburi (bridge over the river Kwai),Ko Somui, Krabi and Phi Phi Islands down on the Adaman sea.

Personally I would spend the 3rd month in Vietnam/Laos and Cambodia.

Thanks for the info and I hope you have a good trip as well. As for my volunteering, I will be working at a wildlife rescue and sanctuary organization (Wildlife Friends of Thailand) for 10 weeks. I'm not sure how much time I will have for travel outside of the 10 weeks, but I'm hoping to be able to see a bit of the country. I'm really looking forward to it! Have fun in Costa Rica!

Hi Erin

I admire you for volunteering for this kind of work. I hope you won't find it too upsetting as we came across quite a bit of neglect and cruelty towards animals out there. I remember about 6 months after we came back there was a big smuggling ring busted who had been exporting endangered species.

have a good trip

I'd agree with that. I went to this market in Thailand last year and was shocked to find some really rare tropical birds in small cages. They can only have been caught in their natural habitat too!!

Worst than that Paulc, we were having a few rainy days on Ko Somui so went into this, supposedly monkey sanctuary. It turned out to be a monkey show where they got them to perform tricks and things. We were so disgusted we walked out. On the way out we noticed tucked out the way, were all these other animals in tiny cages. We did report this place to WWF when we got home.
