HIMALAYA Showing!!! by Godfather on 13 July 2004 6:08pm

Does anyone know the exact date (if one has been set yet) that Himalaya is going to be shown here in Britain? I think i heard it was in August, but i dont know the date. You see,i may be travelling again soon and i'd like to see this series before i go away again. Am i right in having this faded idea of August 19th in my mind from somewhere?

I thought it was in October some time. Michael's series do usually seem to start then, as far as I can remember.

Is that for the US too?

I posted a message last week in the section called New DVDs, though I seemed to have been drowned out by the recent messages from Morse et al. I found some online DVD sellers listing Himalaya on DVD from October 1st. Since Sahara was released the day after part 1 was aired in the UK, then maybe that gives an indication of when its likely to appear. The listings also confirmed that the box set is due for release on November 1st.

The date of October 1st for the release of Himalaya on DVD should be taken as an approximate date. Many book publishers simply indicate the month that a title will be released and as the release date nears specifies an exact date. How common is it in the UK for DVDs to be released on Fridays? ("Normal" release day in the US is Tuesday.)

As to Himalaya airing in the US, I would guess two things:
One-- that it will be at least four to six months after the UK premiere (based on past history of Palin's Travels Series).
Two-- if it airs on a commercial network (i.e. Bravo, the network that aired Sahara), nearly one quarter of each episode will be edited out to make room for commercials (that's what was done to Sahara).

Kinda explains why this Yank will be getting Himalaya on DVD as soon as it is released, huh?

Actually, now you mention it, October 1st is a friday. Most DVDs get released on mondays over in the UK, though some do get bumped back to the previous friday/saturday (such as The Matrix/Harry Potter movies), though admittedly I cant see that happening for this series.
It would make more sense to release it on the following monday, since if it airs in a similar way to Sahara, it will be shown on a sunday night first, with the DVD coming out on the monday immediately after the first episode. This would mean the show would start on Oct 3, with the DVD release on Oct 4, if this info is accurate.
I have to add that when I first saw Full Circle in the US in October 1997, it was only about a month behind the UK. I saw the China episode, then flew over to the UK a few days later and caught the episode on the Amazon during its initial run. Mind you one out of five series doesnt constitute a majority by any means. Ironically I saw more material in the US version of FC than Ive ever seen in the UK cuts, though I completely sympathise with your comments about commercial US TV.
Good luck with your search for the DVD.
