Has Anyone Visited Sri Lanka? by justdna on 15 July 2004 1:27am

Hi, I'm off to Sri Lanka for a wedding later in the year (not mine!). Has anyone been? I'd welcome any comments or recommendations of places to stay or visit! Is it easy to get around independantly??

Sri Lanka is somewhere i still have'nt been to yet. The closest i've been is Tamil Nadu in southern India, where the culture is extremely similar to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is just a little awkward to get to, being an Island. I hear that it's a little bit more pricey than India (but certainly not "expensive" in Asian terms). Tell us all about your trip there,Paul.

Is there anything I should be particularly prepared for, culture wise, Godfather, based on your experiences in Tamil Nadu? I'll only have a week and a half after the wedding. There's talk of a "cultural triangle" of budhist temples which sounds interesting to visit.

Come on everyone, someone must have been there??? I need some honest advice. Beach or temples, Colombo or Kandy??? I'm also finding an excuse to post so that some of the more "irrelevant" posts drop down the list!!

I've never been there but I can tell you they've got very interesting village dances, a bit like hip-hop but with traditionnal funny movements. Very interesting indeed...

I went on holiday last year! It was fabulous but I don't know after the Tsunami.
We went with a tour company called Explore! who gave us a tour round the whole island, meeting elephants in Pinawatalla elephant orphanage, sunbathing in Unawatuna, we even went to Galle and it was horible watching the news when Galle came on. Kandy is great for fire breathing, walking on hot coals and stuff. They also have the Temple of the Tooth which has Buddha's tooth in and a beautiful golden Buddha.
Personally I hated the towns because they were really scary, loads of cars and Tut-Tuts driving madly around! Colombo is a bit like any other capital city in the world, but we only drove through it.
Go to the Golden temple somwhere, I can't remember! There are 5 caves with 550 statues of Buddha in! There is also a wicked pot that water drips into, but it never overflows! It must be magic!!!

We went a few years ago, loved it. Didn't travel independantly though - had it all arranged for us. The people are very friendly - they all seem to be keen on cricket. Had a 2 day trip to the Kandy area - visited a spice garden and had a head and shoulder massage with wonderfully aromatic oils, visited a tea plantation and processing factory. Everyone visits the elephant orphanage, I love elephants but I didn't really like seeing them with chains on their legs - however, the place is rescuing elephants and are doing a good job. It was quite an experience standing in the water washing an elephant with half a coconut shell. If you like spicy food - this is the place for you - it's all fairly hot. Jewellery was well priced, sapphires mined in the country.
Visited the Temple of the Sacred Tooth - a high level of security round the area, however, well worth a visit.
Bought a large pineapple at a roadside stall for a few pence - the sweetest pineapple I have ever tasted (and I've tasted a few)
Enjoy your trip.
